Shildon AFC got their 2020-21 campaign off to a positive start with a behind-closed-doors 4-0 friendly win over Sunderland West End at Dean Street on Saturday, 1st August.

All pre-season friendlies this season will take place behind closed doors due to continuing pandemic safety measures.

Shildon were grateful to the visitors for agreeing to play at short notice after their original opponents pulled out at the last minute.

Jack Vaulks notched the first goal of the new season, sidefooting home a corner from eight yards before a Danny Craggs penalty doubled the lead.

Joe Posthill slotted the third after an excellent give and go and Michael Sweet ensured the Railwaymen ran out comfortable winners, calmly converting after the home side broke the visitors’ off-side trap.

On a sour note, new signing, Alex White was forced to limp off in the second half, although the injury is not suspected to be too serious.

Afterwards, manager Daniel Moore declared himself happy with the performance after a five-month lay off.

“We created a lot of opportunities and scored some good goals,” he said. “It was just a bit of rustiness with the final ball, but I’m happy with four goals and a clean sheet.”

Friendlies will continue against Silksworth, Blue Star, Frickley Athletic and Morpeth Town before the competitive business begins with the FA Cup.

Meanwhile, the FA has released the dates for this year’s FA Cup and FA Vase competitions, with the FA Cup Extra Preliminary and Preliminary Rounds set for Tuesday 1st and Saturday 12th September.

The Qualifying Rounds will culminate with the Fourth Round Qualifying on Saturday 24th October before the Competition Proper gets underway.

The FA Vase will get underway with the First and Second Round Qualifying on Saturdays 19th September and 10th October respectively.

The draws for the first two rounds of both competitions will be released on Tuesday 18th August.

There will be no replays in the qualifying competition of the FA Cup or any round of the FA Vase due to the impact of the pandemic and prize money is also reduced in both competitions.
