Chilton Town Council has moved to quell rumours that it is preparing to close Chilton Cemetery.
A spokesperson said: “It has been brought to the attention of the Town Clerk that there are rumours in the town that the Town Council are going to close the cemetery.
“Please rest assured that this is not the Town Council’s intention. The ICCM (Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management) guidance is that cemeteries can remain open as long as the current social distancing rules are adhered to.
“Please stay safe and follow the government guidelines to stop the spread of Covid 19.”
The Town Clerk added: “I am checking the ICCM Guidance regularly and at the moment cemeteries can remain open.
“The Town Council realise that this is an awful time for everybody. All we ask is that you adhere to social distancing rules and the regular hand washing guidance when you enter and leave your home.
“Unless we are told by the Government that we have to close the cemetery, it will remain open as we know how important it is to the community.
“Please take care and stay safe everyone”.
