Residents in St Helen Auckland were left shaken after a lightning strike split a 45ft tree clean in two, scattering large shards of wood across a 50m radius.
Emergency services were called to Maude Terrace, close to the Something Different Antiques store, at 3.53pm on Sunday afternoon following a clashing thunderstorm. Fire and police officers then closed the road and worked to secure the tree.
Residents reported hearing an ear-splitting bang, which burnt phone line wires and blew connection boxes from the walls in the nearby bungalows.
Because of its enormous size, workmen are still currently working to safely fell the tree, removing a proportion each day.
