Chilton to organise alternative VE Day commemoration

Chilton Town Council is hoping local residents will continue to make private preparations for a VE Day commemoration in the town.

Chilton Town Council is encouraging residents to take part in the VE Day 75th Anniversary on Friday 8th May.

While the official commemorations have been cancelled as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, the local council is determined that the event should not pass without some form of acknowledgement.

A spokesperson for the Town Council said: “We cannot let this anniversary go unmarked, so we are encouraging residents to decorate their homes, windows and gardens and to have a family celebration in your home, or a picnic in your garden – but only with people living in your household to respect social distancing and lockdown measures.”

“It would be great if people could share their photographs on how they are celebrating.

“These can then be uploaded to Town Council website, Facebook page, local press and used for the celebrations hopefully later in the year.”

The Town Council has earmarked 15th and 16th August as dates to celebrate both VE and VJ Days.
