On Wednesday 4th July 2018, Trustees and volunteers from Shildon Community Bus celebrated the acquisition of a brand new Mercedes Sprinter accessible minibus. The purchase of the vehicle at a cost of £53,000 was possible due to a grant of £33,000 from Durham County Council and also because of the hard work, fundraising and good management on the part of the Trustees. The new bus will ensure the Charity is able to continue its service in Shildon and the surrounding area for years to come.
The Community Transport scheme is run entirely by volunteers and has been operational for over 30 years. There are currently nearly 50 affiliated groups using the scheme, which is available to any community or voluntary organisation within Shildon or an 8 mile radius. Anyone wanting more information on the work of the group can contact them any weekday morning on 01388 773666.
A spokesperson for The Trustees said: ”We wish to thank all the users and those who have made donations over the years to enable us to be sustainable. We especially thank Durham County Council for their continued help and support, The Mayor Luan Deakin, and also Excel Conversions of Doncaster, for their usual prompt and efficient service in supplying the vehicle to their exact specification.
”Finally, we would like to wish a great thanks to the dedicated team of volunteers, some of whom have been involved since the group first began- especially the committed office volunteers and drivers. The new vehicle is testament to all those who continue to commit their time and talents to helping the local community without reward, and quite often without thanks.
”If you feel that you could be part of our team, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us”
