A Bishop Auckland couple who were caught fornicating in a Wetherspoons toilet cubicle have appeared in court.
Lee Arron Hopps, aged 30 and 23-year-old Hayley Samantha McClory, both of Farm Close, were before magistrates at Newton Aycliffe on Wednesday 18th February to face charges relating to an incident on 28th January, when police were called to the Pub in Bishop Auckland Market Place.
The court heard that a barman at the pub was made aware of activity in a cubicle of the ladies toilet. Two Special Constables arrived at the scene but the couple refused to come out of the cubicle. Officers made a forced entry and used pepper spray to restrain the pair, before arrests were made while both suspects were still in a state of undress.
Hopps pleaded not guilty to charges of using threatening words and behaviour and of resisting an officer.
McClory pleaded not guilty to two similar charges and to a further charge of assaulting an officer in the execution of his duty. However, she pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal damage to a police blanket (valued at £10.46) which had been placed around her at the police station.
The defendants believe that the incapacitant spray had been used outside of the guidelines given to officers.
The pair were released on unconditional bail and will return to Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court on 10th June when the trial is expected to take up the full day.
The couple smiled and waved at reporters following their court appearance, and as they left the court, McClory grabbed Hopps’s bottom and asked onlookers: “Is that good enough for you?”
