Last month saw Cllr Clive Maddison step down as the Town Mayor and hand over the Mayoral Chains of Office to Cllr Elizabeth Wood.
This Civic Year, the new Town Mayor will be raising funds for the Learning Library, which provides a free service loaning out toys and specialist equipment to adults and children with learning disabilities, supporting their parents and carers too.
She will also be supporting the Solan Connor Fawcett Trust which helps and supports people suffering with cancer, as well as the family and friends affected, aiming to help improve their quality of life.
Cllr Wood said: “I am very proud to be Mayor of Spennymoor having lived in the area all my life.
“I have a lot of family in the town, so I hope to make them proud too.
“I’ll be a small part of the town’s history. My father, who is 98, is very proud and if my mother had been alive she would absolutely over the moon.
“I hope to bring the town together with all the community events we are holding and showcase our lovely park.
“The John Kitson Archway with the Cornish Trail will bring visitors to Spennymoor and with our events we hope to bring them back.
“Instead of people going out of Spennymoor we hope to draw them in.
“I would like the Council to pull together and create a place where people want to come and spend time, being open and transparent with everyone so people actually know what we are doing.
“I have visited both my chosen charities’ premises and have been very impressed with what they do and their total commitment to their causes.
“Both of them support the local community. Although I support all charities when I can, I think it is important for us to look after our own.
“The two charities not only help the individual with their care, but make a difference for the families as well.”
