Ferryhill Ladies continue good form while men struggle

Ferryhill Ladies continued their good form by following up their previous victory in the Durham & District Indoor Bowls League with yet another 8-0 victory, this time away from home against Stanley IBC.

This was a very close game with only four points separating the three rinks by the end of the match.

The rink of R Airey, M Shield and S Heath were winners by two shots, the winning shots coming with three at the last end.

Final scores: S Heath 12-10 V Shield; J Cadman 10-9 C Monaghan; Y Cook 9-8 V Sims.

The men were not able to reproduce their early form as they slumped to two successive Durham & District League defeats.

The first was a 2-6 defeat at home to Durham, with only the rink of A Ridley, B Johnstone and skip K Weallans taking two points with an eight shot victory. Scores: H Wilson 7-24 A Bernard; S Maughan 7-18 A Stafford; K Weallans 18-10 J Burnip.

Two weeks later, away to Great Aycliffe, they fell to the same 2-6 scoreline at a rink where points are always hard to come by.

The newly formed Top Ten League, sponsored by Gordon Fletcher, provided the next game for the men and following a very creditable result away to Stanley in their first game, they were looking to build on this success.

Visitors Darlington had other ideas, however, and sent a very strong side intent on taking the points.

Alan Hind was the home side’s only winner in the singles match with a 24 shot victory over K Burton. The pairs rink of K Tait and C Larcombe were in front with only two ends to play but eventually lost by three shots.

The other rinks were well beaten as Darlington ran out 6-2 winners.

Scores: A Hind (singles) 23-9; C Larcombe/K Tait (pairs) 12-15; C Morrison (triples) 8-33; K Weallans (fours) 6-14.
