Gold for Poppy at Nationals

Chi Spennymoor Taekwondo returned from the National Championships with a haul of medals.

Chi Spennymoor Taekwondo Academy took a team of nine players to the EIS in Sheffield at the end of last month, returning home with a gold medal for 8-year-old Poppy Wickens.

Poppy struck gold in the advanced minus 26kg.

She is unbeaten in her own weight group for over three years and boasts over 42 medals, the majority of which are gold.

She has occasionally lost out to heavier players when she had to move up a weight, but has still managed to take silver.

Poppy also took bronze in Germany earlier this year at the European President Cup, which took place on her 8th birthday.

Ella Whittle took silver at her first nationals after two hard fights and William Burleigh took a bronze medal after an excellent performance.

Milly Hopper also took a bronze after a hard semi final.

The rest of the team, Josh Howat, Lucas Whittle, Ethan Tinkler, Kai Smith and Riley Harker also performed brilliantly and were just shy of the medals table.

Coaches Russell and Marissa said they were extremely proud of all of the players, in what was the first nationals for most of them.

“The team train very hard day in and day out and give it their all,” said Russell.
