Former Mayor hands over funds to chosen charity

Former Mayor of Spennymoor, Cllr Clive Maddison presents a cheque for £10,001.75 to Robert Ellis of Spennymoor Boxing Club.

Former Mayor of Spennymoor, Cllr Clive Maddison, has handed over a cheque to his chosen charity, Spennymoor Boxing Club, for £10,001.75.

Cllr Maddison, who formally handed over the Mayoral Chains last month, had a fantastic year, raising the magnificent sum for the club with a series of fund raising events throughout his time as Mayor.

Cllr Maddison took the time to thank officers, staff, councillors and others who have helped deliver a whole host of projects and events throughout his civic year.

Included were the John Kitson Archway, Norman Cornish Trail, the Cornish Centenary Exhibition in the Bob Abley Art Gallery, the Town Show, Party in the Park, the Remembrance Service and Parade, and several charity fund raising events.

Cllr Maddison said: “I’m really honoured to have been able to help a local club in the town which helps young people get off the streets and at the same time produces champions, of which there have been numerous over the years.

“The boxing club, which has been a success story in the town for thirty years, is run entirely by volunteers, giving its members a wonderful grounding.

“The club is open seven days a week with training taking place every midweek evening and on weekend mornings.

“It also has a thriving girls sections and all are welcome to join.”
